Save vs. Splurge: What an interior designer says is worth spending money on vs. what you should save on
SAVE:
Decorative bedding:
i.e. throw blankets and pillows. These are the smaller items that you can go trendy or seasonal and interchange with your mood! And you don’t sleep with them, so they’re not splurge worthy
Mirrors:
There are definitely different quality levels to mirrors and their frames, but sometimes the price tag is not worth the quality. If it’s something unique, sure go ahead and spend the money. But if you want something simple that has a low option available…stick with the low!
Hardwired Lighting:
Again, there are different quality levels! But unless you have a tried and true 100% traditional style, lighting is typically trendy and fairly simple to swap out. If you’re going trendy, go low.
SPLURGE:
Sheets:
TRUST on this one. They are worth every penny.
Lamps:
I can spot a cheap lamp from 10 miles away. It’s probably lopsided and the shade is so thin that it got dented in transit to your house. One gust of wind (or turn your fan on high) and that thing is a goner.
Large Furniture:
This includes couches, dining tables and beds. Well-made, substantial furniture is life changing. When you upgrade to eating dinner while not having to balance the table legs so your fork doesn’t go flying…you’ve made it. Or to actually being able to fit both butt cheeks on your couch. And nothing, I repeat NOTHING…is worse than a squeaky bed. Spend the money on these, please!
